INTERNSHIP
Our student clinician training program at SMHA is intentionally designed to provide emerging professionals with a well-rounded and collaborative learning experience. At the heart of our program is a value for safe, accessible care for all, utilizing a person-centered approach and emphasizing the importance of tailoring interventions to meet each individual's unique needs and preferences. Student clinicians are provided the opportunity to work directly with clients under the supervision of experienced practitioners, to develop and implement client-specific treatment plans. This hands-on approach ensures that practitioners understand the theoretical underpinnings of interpersonal practice with individuals, families and communities and gain the practical skills needed to be effective and empathetic practitioners.
Rooted in a profound commitment to social justice and anti-oppressive practices, our program empowers student clinicians to make a meaningful impact as mental health professionals in the lives of individuals and our community. Beyond micro-level clinical experiences, students can engage in mezzo and macro-level interventions. Through community engagement, policy analysis, and advocacy opportunities, our interns gain a comprehensive understanding of the complex systems that influence mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Our program prepares students to be skilled clinicians while empowering them to advocate for systemic change, ensuring that access to mental health care is equitable and inclusive. In essence, our training program is a space for student clinicians to become compassionate therapists and agents of positive transformation in our society.
To provide ongoing support, we offer three hours of weekly group supervision to amplify our interns' growth and development. This collaborative learning space provides a platform for student clinicians to engage in reflective discussions, share their experiences, and receive constructive feedback and mentorship from their peers and seasoned professionals. We believe the group supervision component enhances the quality of care our student clinicians provide and fosters a sense of community and interprofessional support, preparing them for the rewarding journey ahead as therapists. We aim to provide student clinicians with a strong foundation as practitioners, equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and empathy needed to make a meaningful societal impact throughout their careers.
